Why Do Scroll Bars Appear in My Lab Virtual Machine?

If you see scroll bars around the virtual machine (VM) inside your lab, don’t worry — the lab is not broken.

Scroll bars appear when the VM display is larger than the space available in your browser window.

This usually happens because of:

  • Browser zoom set above 100%
  • Windows display scaling set above 100%
  • A small screen or low screen resolution
  • The browser window not being maximized
  • The lab not being in Full Screen mode

What’s Happening? (Simple Explanation)

Think of the VM like a picture inside your browser.

If you zoom in or increase display scaling, the picture gets bigger — but your screen does not.

When the picture becomes too large to fit inside the browser window, scroll bars appear so you can move around and see the hidden areas.

Nothing is wrong with the lab. The display is simply larger than the available viewing space.

Who Is Most Likely to See This?

Some users are more likely to experience scroll bars:

✔ Users on Work or School Computers

Many organizations lock display scaling at 125% or 150%. If you cannot change display settings, scroll bars are more likely to appear.

✔ Users on Small Laptops

Smaller screens (such as 13–14 inch laptops or 1366×768 resolution displays) have less vertical space, making scroll bars more common.

✔ Users with Windows Display Scaling Above 100%

If your Windows “Scale” setting is 125%, 150%, or higher, the effective viewing area is reduced.

✔ Users on High-Resolution (4K) Displays

High-resolution screens often use automatic scaling, which reduces usable viewing space even though the resolution is high.

✔ Users Who Zoom In on Their Browser

If your browser zoom is above 100%, the VM display becomes larger than the available window space.

Quick Fix (Most Common Solution)

In most cases, this resolves the issue:

  1. Set your browser zoom to 100%
    • In Chrome: Click the three dots (⋮) → Set Zoom to 100%
  2. Maximize your browser window
  3. Press F11 to enter Full Screen mode

This usually removes the scroll bars immediately.

If Scroll Bars Still Appear

You may need to check Windows display scaling:

  1. Right-click your Desktop
  2. Select Display Settings
  3. Look for Scale
  4. If it is set above 100%, try setting it to 100% (if allowed by your organization)

If your device is managed by your school or company, you may not be able to change this setting. In that case, scroll bars may still appear depending on your screen size.

Why Does the Display Sometimes Look Blurry?

If you use:

  • “Fit Window to Machine”
  • Browser zoom above 100%

The VM display is scaled rather than resized. Scaling can slightly reduce clarity.

For the sharpest image:

  • Keep browser zoom at 100%
  • Use Full Screen mode
  • Avoid unnecessary zooming

Important Notes

  • Scroll bars do not affect lab functionality.
  • This is not caused by a lab error.
  • Some programs inside the VM use fixed window sizes and cannot resize.
  • Changing resolution on one VM does not change other VMs in the lab.

When to Contact Support

Contact support if:

  • The lab does not load
  • The screen is completely distorted
  • You cannot interact with the VM

If possible, include:

  • Your browser type
  • Your screen resolution
  • Your Windows scaling percentage

In most cases, adjusting browser zoom and using Full Screen mode resolves the issue quickly.
