📌 Issue Summary
In several labs, including the CCT and EHE lab series, students may encounter an issue where running Server210.exe (Theef) appears to do nothing—no window opens, no message displays, and no error occurs.
This behavior is normal and expected for this type of application.
❓ Why This Happens
Server210.exe is a component of the Theef Remote Access Trojan (RAT) simulation. In real-world scenarios, RATs are designed to operate silently in the background to avoid detection by users and security tools. Therefore:
🔒 Stealthy Behavior: There is no graphical user interface (GUI)—the program runs silently without popping up any windows.
⚙️ Background Tasks: The application may be setting up persistence, waiting for commands, or listening for connections in the background.
👀 No Visible Confirmation: You will not see a message or notification indicating the program started. Also, it's unlikely to show up in Task Manager or with standard process commands like tasklist.
✅ What You Should Do
Even if you do not see any immediate response, follow these steps:
-
Assume the tool is running unless your system gives an error.
-
Continue with the lab instructions as outlined.
-
Observe behavior on the attacker machine (Windows 10) later in the lab—this will confirm the RAT is functioning as expected.
🚫 Potential Blocker: Windows Defender
If Theef still doesn’t appear to function:
-
Disable Real-Time Protection:
-
Go to Start > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
-
Click Manage settings.
-
Toggle Real-time protection to Off.
-
-
Try launching
Server210.exeagain after disabling Defender. -
Check Windows Security > Protection History to see if the file was blocked or quarantined.
🔁 Still Not Working?
If the above steps don’t resolve the issue:
-
Try running the file as Administrator: Right-click
Server210.exe> Run as administrator. -
If needed, relaunch the lab after disabling Defender before accessing the files.
